i'm getting my first tattoo?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

im getting my first tattoo, in memory of my aunt
who battled cancer for 4 years, and then passed away,
it made a huge impact on my life
and i think about her everyday and miss her so much

http://www.bmeink.com/A70823/high/bmepb594744.jpg
^ thats where i want it to go, so its close to my heart, and that size
but i want the chinese symbol for love
http://www.bmeink.com/A80718/high/nu7q-love-and-beauty.jpg
^the left symbol

the tattoo will be black and that little loop(looks like a ribbon) on the bottom, is going to fade into pink, seeing she had breast cancer then it traveled throughout her body

i was just wondering, how much does that spot hurt?
and do you like the idea?
i dont want words, or anything really big, i was something nice and simple,
ill go to several tattoo shops and make sure, my mom's son is a tattoo artist, and he is doing it for me.

I would be careful about that location. I've heard the area around the ribs is actually one of the most painful. Also, be careful that you are actually getting the Chinese symbol for love and not something else. One little alteration to the tattoo (a misplaced line etc.) can change the meaning of the tattoo to something completely different.

Overall, though, I think the idea is great…especially incorporating the pink ribbon.

How fast does cancer take to get to stage 3 or 4?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

How many months or years does it take for Breast cancer? What's the average?

I think that's a hard thing for anyone to say with cancer. Many factors contribute to how fast the cancer will spread (for an overview of how cancer spreads, view: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metastasis ).

For example, they recently discovered that ovarian cancer grows wildly out of control when a woman is under stress compared to a woman who is not under stress (that cancer thrives with the hormones and blood vessel formation in the tumors).

And that is basically the long and short answer, it is many factors. Also diet can contribute…for example asprin is shown to reduce ovarian cancer (yes I know you are referring to breast cancer, this is just where most of my research has been so far) and ginger has been shown to attack and kill it's cells in lab settings.

The Maitake mushroom extract, specifically the 'D-Fraction' extract (see www.maitake.com) has been shown to boost the immune system and also have anti-tumor effects in lab settings (animals) especially breast cancer. The Maitake D-Fraction is now under a few FDA approved phase 2 clinical trials to substantiate this. It goes to show than even diet and certain foods can help reduce metastisis…that is when the stages go up from 3 to 4 (etc). 3 is when the cancer spreads to local organs (or impacts them) and 4 is when it goes to distant organs (3 and 4 are always bad, but 4 is worse because it is impacting organs not close to the original cancer).

In addition, even though it is 'breast cancer', when it impacts other organs no matter where it is (for example the brain, etc.) it is still referred to breast cancer because that is the original cancer type.

Support groups for people who have refused radiotherapy?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

This is for women who have had breast cancer surgery, and hormonal treatment.
I would also be interested survival rates and statistics that are relevant.
Does any one know of any support groups online or real for people not following the medical guidance

This looks like a good site:

Good luck. I know what you're going through.

At what age should women start getting mammograms when their mother has had breast cancer before 50?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Specifically, what does the American Cancer Society state on this along with the OB/GYNs opinion?

This is an issue you should talk to your doctor about. I was just reading about a congresswoman who has introduced a bill to promote education of younger women from the age of 15 to 45 about breast cancer. The Susan Komen Foundation has also taken up this cause (I got an email from them today). There are more younger women being diagnosed with breast cancer and educating women on what normal breast tissue feels like is important and since each woman is different it is important for each woman to be familiar with her own body and to be proactive about getting further diagnostic tests done if necessary.

Doctors too need to be educated in the importance of the increasing incidence of cancer in women under the age of 40. My sister was 35 when she was diagnosed. I was 49.

Mammogram isn't always a good diagnostic tool for younger women, especially if they have dense breast tissue but there are other tests that can be used, especially if there is a history of breast cancer in pre-menopausal family members.

Breast Cancer signs? Help please?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

can a yound girl around the age of 14-15 get breast cancer? and what are the signs also how do you get it and how do you see if you have it?

That is very young to get breast cancer. It is usually seen in woman much older and sometimes in men. The risk factors are a family history, being overweight, inactivity, and increased levels of estrogen. First you need to stay active because activity decreases estrogen levels enough to cut the chances significantly. Second see your doctor every year for a physical. The doctor can see changes that will alert him/her. Third do a breast exam on your self one week after your period. Sometimes lumps are felt but go away, this is normal hormonal fluctuations. Caffeine can make lumps large and sore so stay away from excessive caffeine. If you note a lump that gets larger, there is swelling, discharge from your nipple, tenderness or the skin changes around the area see the doctor. You really are very young and don't need to worry too much but it's always good to examine yourself every week so you can spot changes if they occur.

Breast Cancer Scrapbook ideas?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

My Spanish teacher, who is one of my most favorite teachers ever, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. I decided that my class and I should secretly make a scrapbook for her and present it on a random day, just as a small way to show that we support her. We decided that each person will make his/her own page in which he/she will attach a picture of him/herself, and that the last few pages will be class pages. However, I'm not the most experience scrapbooker ever and was wondering if anyone had ideas on decorating pages. I've used stickers before, written/typed in crazy fonts (if anyone has new written font ideas, that'd be great), cut things out of construction paper and glued them on, glued in origami, cut things out of felt, and decorated with ribbon and yarn on some previous scrapbooks. As of now, I haven't picked out a scrapbook and colors yet, so I can't give you a color scheme, but ANY ideas would truly, truly be appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance!

One more thing, if anyone has been through breast cancer and/or knows anyone who has been through breast cancer, what are some quotes that helped you get through those tough times (extra brownie points if they're in Spanish! :P).

Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance. :)
Hi - I am a breast cancer survivor and what you're planning to do is a wonderful idea. The most important quote you can use is, "Never, never, never give up!" And as for the pages - perhaps each person could write a little bit about what the teacher has taught them about life in general, not just Spanish. The Breast cancer support color is pink, but some of us (ME!!!) don't like pink, so I've used burgundy instead. Hope this helps you a little bit.

Breast Enhancement Surgery

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Breast enlargement surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons asps.

Breast enlargement surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), was the fourth most popular invasive surgical procedure among cosmetic plastic surgeries performed in 2000. In a press release dated July 12, 2001, the ASPS says that breast augmentation was performed on 212,500 women last year.

Meanwhile, millions of women have been subjected to the ill effects of these modern day vanity contraptions that were bought in good faith.

Remember!!

Silicone gel implants were banned in 1992 by FDA.

If you have (or had) a ruptured silicone breast implant, you will be denied Health Insurance Coverage.

Saline-filled implants tend to have a higher rate of leaking and deflation than silicone gel implants, which means more frequent surgery to replace them.

In a study published in the Lancet medical journal, Dr Lori Brown of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says: “There is emerging consensus that both the incidence and prevalence of breast-implant rupture are much higher than previously suspected.”

21% overall increase in cancers for women with implants, compared to women of the same age in the general population.

Implant patients were three times as likely to die from lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia as other plastic surgery patients. The study is based on medical records and death certificates of almost 8,000 women with breast implants, including silicone gel implants and saline implants, and more than 2,000 other plastic surgery patients. ( National Cancer Institute (NCI), Boston University, Abt Associates, and the Food and Drug Administration, with Dr. Louise Brinton from NCI as lead author.

Get Tested and Avoid Lung Cancer

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Smoking is BAD! Is there still a living soul that doesn’t know and understand this? There can’t be. The media won’t let such a thing happen. Just take a gander at all the anti-smoking commercials aired daily. If they don’t get the point across, nothing will. As we all know, smoking leads to lung cancer. It’s not exclusively for those with poor genetics or smokers over the age of 65. It can apply to anyone who lights up regularly. One measly cigarette will taint your lungs for a full month. Imagine what a pack a day will do to them. We’re talking some serious damage here. So, if you’re still on the fence about smoking, I think it’s time for a few recent articles on lung cancer.

A surprising finding is that if your parents smoked in the house during your childhood and adolescence, your risk of lung cancer is double as an adult even if you yourself don’t smoke. Parents, think again lighting up your next cigarette! This year, lung cancer will kill about 163,500 Americans and remains the number one cause of cancer deaths taking more lives than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

More than one billion people worldwide are smokers even though nine out of ten lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. By the year 2020 it’s estimated that as many as ten million people a year will die of smoking related diseases unless radical action is taken to curb the advance of the mega-bucks tobacco industry into Third World countries. About three quarters of those ten million deaths will be in developing nations.

I love to read. Not just novels and the Sunday paper. I mean I really like to read and learn about new things. It’s refreshing and I need to know what’s happening in the world today. If it’s not articles on lung cancer, its break-throughs regarding heart disease or prostate enlargement.

I learned a little bit about how diet affects lung cancer. An apple a day may keep lung cancer away. A Finnish study suggests that apples not only keep doctors away, but provide protection for the lungs as well. This study found that people who ate the most apples were 58 % less likely to develop lung cancer. Other studies suggest that lung cancer risk is lower among smokers and non smokers who ate at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruits daily.

It’s always prudent to add new data to the brain banks. This way you don’t wander through life like a naive, uninformed dolt. You prevent things before they occur, and you seek the newest medications upon the detection of a health affliction. With some health issues, it’s pretty cut and dry. One would think that common sense would overrule, but apparently it doesn’t. If it did, folks wouldn’t still be smoking like chimneys. Some individuals just need a scare before they can get on the smoke-free bandwagon. If current articles on lung cancer won’t do the trick, maybe respiratory problems will.

Make sure you get tested for lung cancer. In approximately 25% of people with lung cancer, there are no symptoms and the cancer is detected during screening or a routine physical examination. However, in three-quarters of lung cancer patients there are warning symptoms and signs that can alert the patient or their physician.

One of the most amusing things I’ve ever seen is a person smoking through the hole cut out of their throat. Now that’s bright! Obviously some people have a horrible time kicking the habit. However, there is irrefutable evidence linking smoking to serious health afflictions. Any articles on lung cancer, asthma and Bronchitis can inform you of this. We need to work toward a smoke-free environment, because all the rest of us are being assaulted by the second-hand stuff. That’s not right! Kick the habit before it kicks you off the primordial coil.
