Triple negative breast cancer stage 2 B and I am scared,?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

that it could come back. It is the worst kind of breast cancer next to invasive, and the chance that it will return within three years just scares me because the first time was horrible. I am having a hard time sleeping and I am not sure the fear of it’s returning will go away.

Fear grips me, and I can’t tell her about the feelings I have. How do we cope? It’s driving me insane.

Hi Dave,

I’m sorry you are having such a hard time as I understand it this is common with cancer patients and their loved ones. This is the type of question that I (thankfully) have no personal experience with and I am not the best one to answer. To add to lo_mcg excellent answer the only thing I can suggest is to call the American Cancer Society. They have an amazing amount of information and resources regarding cancer and they should be able to provide you with someone or a group in your area to help you with this and perhaps something specifically for the spouse of a cancer survivor. You need someone who understands the disease and how you feel. Neither of you went through all that hell just so that it could continue to take away from your happiness.

To answer lo_mcg question regarding triple negative cancers. Yes it is a good thing to be Her2 negative, but not so much so when you are also ER/PR negative. If you are ER/PR positive we know your cancer will respond to hormone treatment lowering the risk for recurrence, when you are negative you do not have this option. Although being Her2 positive indicates a more aggressive cancer we know Herceptin will shut down that signal lowering the chance of recurrence. When all 3 are negative there is no targeted treatment and all that is left is chemo. It is always better to be able to target something we know your cancer uses to survive. There has been a lot of ongoing research to identify other biologic targets and there are drugs in clinical trials now testing the effectiveness so that triple negative patients have another option.

Let us know how you are doing Dave. You will always have friends here who understand,

Is there anyone with stage 1 breast cancer, who by her choice did not do chemotherapy?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

My wife had stage 1 breast cancer, poorly differentiated 1.1 cm invasive, her2/neu positive, er/pr negative. I don’t want to do chemotherapy. I am looking for some one who skipped chemo.

Your wife is the one with cancer so you don’t have to worry about chemotherapy. What is important is what she wants to do and whether or not someone undergoes chemo is always the patient’s choice. What someone else decided to do has nothing to do with your wife’s cancer and should have no place in her decision. Treatment recommendations are based primarily on evidence. Her tumor size and negative nodes are not a high risk for recurrence, but she has an aggressive cancer and her age plays a role. Her oncologist should explain the reasons behind their recommendation and they should make sense to your wife. Then she should get one or two other opinions before she makes her decision.

Can a person with stage 1 breast cancer have it return years later and metastasize?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

I have reported Adolf myself. He is a ignorant bastard.

Anything can happen. But if you stay up to date with regular screening, the odds of it getting that far are a lot less.

Does anyone know where to find "Understanding the Stages of Breast Cancer" by Eli Lilly?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Understanding the Stages of Breast Cancer
Lilly Pharmaceuticals
AJCC
Cancer Staging Manual
6th edition
New York NY
Springer-Verlag
2002:223-240
GC#48466

I did a search online, as I’m sure you did also, and came up empty. If I were you, I’d contact the pharmaceutical company website and see if they can help you. See the source link I posted. Good luck!
