October 2006 (Medialink) - In 2006, of the 212,920 women in the U.S. diagnosed with breast cancer, approximately 25% will have tumors that carry the HER2 gene. This gene causes a more aggressive form of breast cancer, greater likelihood of recurrence, poorer prognosis and decreased survival - compared to women with other forms of breast cancer. The results of a HER2 test can give a woman insight into her breast cancer and help her and her physician make more informed decisions about appropriate treatment options. Women should ask if a HER2 test has been done on their breast cancer and discuss the test results with their physician.
To help empower women everywhere to ask their doctors for a HER2 test, fashion designer Daniella Clarke of Frankie B. is announcing a national public awareness campaign called “HER2 Genes.” This campaign is designed to raise awareness among women about HER2-positive breast cancer and the importance of HER2 testing through a new and unique avenue: fashion.
By purchasing a pair of “HER2 Genes” online from now until November, Frankie B. will donate all of the proceeds to Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, whose mission is to raise awareness and help women today who can’t wait for tomorrow’s cure. Daniella hopes the “Genes” will become a symbol of empowerment for the thousands of women who will be diagnosed with HER2-positive disease each year. For more information about the HER2 Genes campaign, visit www.her2genes.com or www.y-me.org.
