Emory Winship Cancer Institute patient Jessica Lucas, co-owner of Intown Pilates Atlanta and an actress, was diagnosed with breast cancer at 33. When doctors found it had spread to her liver, she went from early to late stage cancer in the blink of an eye. But over the past seven years—despite several surgeries, many rounds of chemo, and more than a hundred infusions—she has lived a vibrant, active life, defying the stereotype of chronically ill cancer patients. This is Jessicas story, with images by Emory photographer Kay Hinton, as told in her own words.

SonoCiné utilizes the most advanced medical imaging scanners, including the Siemens Acuson Sequoia™ and the Philips HDI 5000™, to generate image sequences. These sequences are then reconstructed by SonoCiné’s viewing system into both 2D and 3D interactive ciné loops.
Kevin M. Kelly, MD, the inventor of SonoCiné, credits Firehand Technologies Corporation and its founder Matthew W. Smith for the computer technology that enabled his invention.
At present, the most important investigational use of SonoCiné is computer-guided ultrasound whole-breast cancer detection. The SonoCiné breast cancer detection process collects 2,000 to 5,000 permanent ultrasound images from throughout both breasts and optimally presents these images for later radiologist review on a high-resolution monitor. Although SonoCiné is still undergoing clinical evaluation, data to date suggest that when used with mammography, SonoCiné whole-breast ultrasound may reduce the chance of undetected breast cancer and the necessity of radical or invasive treatment through early detection.
SonoCiné, Inc. anticipates that upon FDA approval, there will be significant demand for its products and services, especially for SonoCiné whole-breast ultrasound because breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death and illness in women worldwide.

What is the PVDA Ride for Life?
Ride for Life is a licensed dressage show sponsored by The Potomac Valley Dressage ociation. This unique event has a very special purpose — to fund breast cancer research at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Center. Riders raise donations, 100% of the admissions donations; the proceeds from a Silent Auction, Gala and a percentage of logo merchandise sales all benefit the cause. An annual equestrian tradition, the PVDA Ride for Life attracts top riders from the U.S. and abroad, including Olympians, to compete for prizes and championship titles. About 200 horses are shown in various competitive levels during the 2-day show. The Saturday evening Dancing Horse Challenge with its special musical freestyles exquisitely performed by top FEI Dressage riders is rapidly becoming The Show to See in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Social events, unique shopping in 45 boutiques and a Silent Auction round out this family oriented and visitor-friendly show.
