New Advancements in Cancer Detection and Treatment Biotechno

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

New Advancements in Cancer Detection and Treatment Biotechnology Industry Organization Leading Expert and Cancer Survivor Patient on How Biotechnology is Saving Lives There are more than 12 million cancer survivors living in the U.S. today and many of them can thank biotechnology therapies for saving their lives. Encouraging progress is being made daily in attacking this challenging and life-threatening disease, as the U.S. marks Cancer Awareness Month (Sept.) and Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Oct.).

Today’s biotechnology therapies are more targeted, more personalized, and often produce fewer side effects than traditional treatments. Gene testing allows for better detection and more targeted treatments. Cancer vaccines are preventing infections from cancer-causing viruses as well as treating existing cancers, without harming healthy cells. As the country’s aging population increases, these new therapies are rising to the challenge of eradicating this disease, which will kill nearly 566,000 Americans this year.

Talent/Guest: James C. Greenwood, President and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization

Jim Greenwood is President and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) in Washington, D.C., which represents more than 1,200 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across the United States and in more than 30 other nations. Mr. Greenwood represented Pennsylvania’s Eighth District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2005. A senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, he was widely viewed as an expert on health and the environment.

Talent/Guest: Lori Lober, Breast Cancer Survivor

In 2000, Lori Lober was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes and to her liver. The standard treatment for her type of cancer offered no hope, and her physician said she had 12-18 months to live. Lori opted to participate in a clinical trial offering a biotechnology treatment. By using this as the foundation of her treatment, and combining other therapies, she is alive and well today. Through her book, “Bigger than Pink,” and her foundation, “Touched by Cancer,” Lober has become an unwavering beacon of hope for those who have been affected by cancer firsthand or through a loved one’s experience
